This is one of the bigger questions Where should one BE if there is a collapse I agonized over this so I got out of Orlando Florida after 23 years there a nightmare scenario of a place...I wont go into all the reasons here
a friend had a retreat, very secluded in western north carolina mountains, 3,000 feet elevation very, very rural unfortunately, he lost it when he couldn't make a balloon payment then I have a female friend who has an 84 acre hidden farm in central virginia me I chose a small town on the border of virginia and north carolina well over an hour to Raleigh and 2 hours to Richmond not THAT far but STILL outside the cities
my town has 1,100 people I know quite a few of them, many good people surrounded by farms and farmland away from the LINES OF DRIFT (Rawles)
the best confirmation of my choice is oddly a fiction book by James Howard Kunstler I know, its fiction, but he wrote a pioneering non-fiction book THE LONG EMERGENCY...this will now be controversial with gas here now 2.19 a gallon, but fracking companies now all going broke, their bonds blowing up with oil prices so low...a whole BIG discussion
anyway, THEE book that convinced me of small town away from the city was WORLD MADE BY HAND
Yes large towns are going to become a killing zone in short order. Diseases, large gangs and criminals of every order are going to be out for themselves. It truly will be a WORLD WITHOUT LAW!
A a small town might be marginally better. I wouldn't count on the people of the town for their good nature and generosity when they're hungry and scared. Also your going to have the same criminal elements as larger towns, it just might be Bubba and his cousins.
Take a look at your small town and how many houses have a garden? Or small farm animals such as rabbits and chickens? If they don't have it now they are not going to magically appear the day after.
I also live in a farming area and very few farms have a personal garden or livestock. This also means that they are not canning or put up food stock. When it comes right down to it they are no better off than cityfolk.
I personally believe that land outside of city limits is the only way to go. Where you can have livestock's goats, chickens and rabbits for start. Also not in a target rich environment as in the city.
